Sweet Violet has long been a staple of women’s fragrances, and enjoyed enormous popularity during the Victorian era. During the late 19th and early 20th century in Great Britain, there was a huge market for imported Italian Violets for perfuming purposes. Many British developed a small cottage industry to capitalize on the craze.
Sweet violet is a delectably scented, deep indigo- and purple-colored species native to much of Europe. Large or unusually colored forms would have been taken from the wild for Tudor gardens.
