Hawaiian Black Ginger
[compare to Votivo® Black Ginger®-brand]
An incredible version of the nectar of this indiginous Southeast Asian flower.
Ginger is a warming herb now cultivated in the U.S., India, China, the West Indies and other tropical locations. It's a creeping perennial that grows on a thick, tuberous rhizome. Narrow, lance shaped leaves die off each year and this particular variety is very slow to send up new leaves to replace them. This flower, which grows directly from the root, has a different scent from the more usual ginger varieties.
The very dramatic variety, Black Ginger, is of the same general shape but has a wrinkled ashy-colored skin. Where it is removed, the heart of the plant turns black with exposure. The leaves are very dark green, almost black... hence the name.
The fragrance is deeper, more musky and, though not quite as sharp, it still has the incredible heat and pungence of the fresh root. Glorious.
