Description: Geranium is a hairy perennial shrub, often used in hedgerows, and will stand up to about one meter high (3 feet) with pointed leaves, serrated at the edges and pinkish-white flowers. The leaves and stalks are used for extraction, and the oil is obtained through steam distillation.

Color & Consistency: A yellowish-brown to green, thin oil.

Strength of Aroma: Strong.

Common Uses: Warming, tonic, balancing. A great oil for the time of menopause and menstruation. Balancing and lifting emotions. Refreshing and uplifting. Important perfume ingredient; also a powerful insect repellent. Antidepressant, antihemorrhagic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astingent, cicatrizant, deodorant, diuretic, fungicidal, hemostatic, stimulant (adrenal cortex), styptic, tonic, vermifuge, vulnerary. Has been used for conditions such as dysentery, hemorroids, inflammations, metorrhagia and menorrhagia (excessive blood loss during menstruation) Used for piles and internal bleeding. Has been used for diarrhoea, children's cholera, chronic dysentery; a good gargle.

Blends with: clary sage, chamomile, basil, thyme, cedarwood, rosemary, lavender, patchouli, clove, cardamom, rose, orange, sandalwood, jasmine, juniper, bergamot and other citrus oils.

Aromatic Scent: Floral, fresh, sweet, with a fruity note. A strong heavy rose-like odor with a characteristic minty top note.

History:The plants originated in South Africa as well as Reunion, Madagascar, Egypt and Morocco. They were introduced to European countries, such as Italy, Spain and France, in the 17th century. In early times geraniums were planted around the house to help keep evil spirits at bay. Traditionally Geranium Essential Oil has been used for circulatory problems, the respiratory and reproductive system for skin and hair care and as a general nerve tonic.

Cautions: Non-toxic, non-irritant and generally non-sensitizing, though it can cause sensitivity in some people and, due to the fact that it balances the hormonal system, it should be avoided during pregnancy.
